Separate reports continue to emanate from trusted websites claiming that Microsoft's next console will emerge in 2012...
In the latest addition to what's been a gradually building mound of speculation in the wake of E3 2011, yet another site is claiming that Microsoft's next console will be revealed at E3 2012.
BGR is reporting that a "source with knowledge" of the plans at Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division has claimed that an E3 2012 reveal for the next Xbox appears likely, and that the console has been in development since 2006.
This follows a report earlier in the month from Videogamer, which cited a "high-ranking" source at Crytek who claimed that Timesplitters 4 is running on the next Xbox. The source also noted that an E3 2012 reveal appears likely and, somewhat unsurprisingly, that the console is running on DirectX 11 compliant technology.
Both of these reports follow hot-on-the-heels of a Develop article from May which suggested that Microsoft was primed for an E3 2011 announcement of its next console. A "senior source" at EA apparently told the site that an unnamed studio at the publisher had the new console in a very early build with no casing, set in a PC shell.
An EA spokesperson subsequently distanced the company from the report, calling it "100 per cent untrue", while the speculated E3 2011 announcement obviously did not emerge. Nonetheless, a launch by the end of 2012 was stipulated by Develop's apparently "well-placed" source.
Our verdict: There's no smoke without fire, although it's hard to find many common threads throughout these reports beyond an E3 announcement. Apart from the suggestion that it will support DX11, which is kind of a no-brainer, there's no additional info on the system to sift through at this stage either (A next-gen Timesplitters 4 does sound pretty awesome though).
Various publishers and developers have publicly indicated that 2013/2014 is a likely timeframe for the next-gen consoles to arrive (which doesn't necessarily discount an E3 2012 announcement), so we're sticking with that for now.
