Hideo Kojima compares Microsoft's Natal to the graphical shift from 2D to 3D graphics in the 1990s...
News on Sony and Microsoft's new motion sensing technology has been spilling out of the Tokyo Game Show today, with Hideo Kojima once again managing to sum-up the moment by comparing Microsoft's Natal tech to "the 2D to 3D shift" in graphics during the 90s.
According to Gamasutra, Kojima said that he saw Natal as a major step forward for the games industry, "like the 2D to 3D shift, or the first time that I ever played with Family Computer [NES]," he commented as part of a TGS panel discussing the technology.
In related news, Microsoft has announced the list of publishers currently working on games that incorporate Natal tech, which are as follows:
- Activision Blizzard
- Bethesda Softworks
- Capcom
- Disney Interactive
- Electronic Arts
- Konami
- MTV Games
- Namco Bandai
- Sega
- Square Enix
- THQ
- Ubisoft
Notable exceptions to the list include Take-Two Interactive and Codemasters (assuming that Eidos is incorporated under the Sqaure Enix label), although the list does encompass every other major games publisher under the sun.
Sony has also been plugging its motion sensing 'Wand' at the TGS show (which is still being tentatively referred to as the Motion Controller) by announcing the range of first-party titles that will support the peripheral:
- Ape Escape (Working Title)
- Echochrome 2 (Working Title)
- Eccentric Slider (Working Title)
- Sing and Draw (Working Title)
- Champions of Time (Working Title)
- Motion Party (Working Title)
- The Shoot (Working Title)
- Tower (Working Title)
- PAIN
- Flower
- Hustle Kings
- High Velocity Bowling
- EyePet
While most are titles that are still in development, some of the games are already available on PSN and will likely be updated to support the Motion Controller when its released.
Technical specs on the 'Wand' were also detailed, including the controller's two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope, and three axes accelerometer. The PS Eye camera then effectively tracks the peripheral's motion and can also recognise a player's body and voice, while the 'Wand' itself will be rumble enabled for DualShock-esque vibrating feedback.
The 'Wand' is currently scheduled for release in spring 2010, while early indications are that Microsoft's Natal tech will surface towards the end of next year. Which one will be triumphant? Your thoughts in the comments...
