Legendary developer provides an extra oomph to music playing on the Xbox 360...

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable surprises for TVG during the Xbox 360 presentation was discovering a fancy music-visualizer that will be built into the Xbox 360. Realising it was similar to the works of the legendary Jeff Minter, we were somewhat startstruck to realise that the man behind Tempest and the sadly-canned Unity is responsible for the application.

The synthesizer provided us with the only opportunity to grab hold of the Xbox 360 controller, affecting the trademark trippy visuals with the analogue stick and shoulder buttons/triggers â?“ anybody whoâ??s seen Minterâ??s VLM or Unity will know what to expect.

Minterâ??s association with Microsoft sprung up from a freak situation, leaving Microsoft executives and a certain J Allard bowled over by what the magical Minter can come up with. The music synthesizer is essentially based on Minterâ??s VLM experience, although everything has been written from the start with a fantastic new graphics engine that pushes shaders to the max.

During a brief chat over a cigarette or two, Minter claimed that development on the Xbox 360 is a dream, with the SDK providing an accessible environment to create sublime visual effects. Consoles have often stuck music synthesizers in as a last touch, so itâ??s refreshing to find that the Xbox 360 will offer something a little extra when itâ??s time to chill out and listen to some music â?“ particularly suited given the media angle that Xbox 360 is taking.

The Xbox 360 controller comes across as a subtle blend between Xbox and PS2, feeling surprisingly light yet at the same time solid and sturdy â?“ certainly a highlight after the dismal â??Sidewinderâ? esque designs of the Playstation3 controllerâ?¦ The introduction of shoulder buttons in addition to triggers is a welcome addition, while â??The Guideâ? button is without doubt a signature feature on the pad, bringing you in touch with the Xbox Live side of things instantaneously.

Hopefully Minterâ??s collaboration with Microsoft will provide the opportunity for further creations â?“ as Jeff put it, Tempest 4000 with the new engine would work brilliantly on Xbox Live Arcade, while we live in hope that Microsoft could bring Unity back from the dead.

Weâ??ll have more from Jeff Minter soonâ?¦

im just going to point out the obvious flaws in many peoples opinions of the ps3 , just like freeradical has pointed out multiplatform titles are typically ported from the 360 rather than from the ps3, as the ps3 is a far more complex machine it takes developers far longer to create games for it so its easier to do the 360 first and then port over to the ps3, now obviously early multiplatform games really do look quite poor on ps3 compared to the 360 versions "prime example Midnight Club LA" on ps3 has really bad analising and depth of field, the 360 version is sharper and has better analising.

lets not get into a fanboy argument though as the upcomming GT5 has certainly demonstrated just how good the ps3's graphics capability can be if a lot of time is put into game development, that said both the 360 and ps3 "exclusive titles" look far better than the multiplatform games on those systems but quite a few game development studios are making the ps3 ports look and play far better than previous years "quantum of solace" look's as good as the 360 version on the ps3 and its the same with MW2.

the 360 and ps3's graphic capabilitys are almost identicle, no one can state 1 is better than the other, there both great consoles just stop arguing over spilt milk (what are you gamers or children "got the menatality of a child") and stop taking references from fanboy driven websites (we all know youtube should be called fantube) also vg-chartz sales figures are well off the actual and correct numbers no one realy cares if the ps3 has sold 38 million and the 360 sold 41 million, does anyone know the actual nuber of consoles in pysical use and how many people use there system online ??? thses are the questions people should be asking not how many consoles have been sold as thats an inacurate way of proving how popular a system is.

@ Post 519: With multiformat titles, PS3 versions have tended to struggle graphically. This is an issue to do with 'pouring' the code onto the PS3 platform.

Many studios have openly discussed the PS3's complicated architecture from a development point of view.

Additionally, early on in this generation's lifecycle, studios got used to developing for Xbox 360 ahead of PS3 and then 'pouring' that code onto the PS3 version (because the 360 was the first console to launch and most prominent in the market up until 2008/09).

This lead to multiformat games struggling on PS3 (particularly ports like the original BioShock. Half Life: The Orange Box, or Bayonetta) due to the system's complex architecture. The operating systems for PC and Xbox 360, I understand, are easier to work with and more compatible with each other as well.

However, where games have been built exclusively for the PS3 (e.g. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, or Killzone 2), the high level of graphical capability that the system offers has been clearly evident.

I own all three consoles.  The PS3 still is my 2nd choice over my 360...especially when it comes to online gaming.  Sorry, but it IS a lot easier to find my friends on the 360 and party up with them than it is on the PS3.

I don't have a lot of time for gaming, and it seems as if I'm always having to wait for a 20 minute system update when I turn on my PS3...so there goes 20 minutes of the limited time I have.

So right now my PS3 is used for exclusives and watching Blu-Ray.

Sorry, but the PS3 is a major hassle and for a system that is supposed to be oh so powerful.  I dont understand why the 360 versions always run at higher resolution and look better (case in point, Red Dead Redemption which was pixelated and ugly on the PS3...I swapped it for the 360 version) if the PS3 is supposed to be this super computer.

go on you retarded 360 fans minus every thing thats true, truth hurts dont it, face facts the 360 is no success story if it was the wii and ps3 would be languishing in sales and fact is there not, the wii has pi***d all over the 360 monopoly and the ps3 is catching up real fast (only 3 million difference between 360 and ps3) and sad retards on youtube like GeneralMLD just suck up to microsoft and turn a blind eye to the fact's in front of his face, the 360 is gradually fading away and kinect is just gonna add a huge lead weight to that titanic of a console you love as the 360, good luck with your sinking ship.

lol this is even funnier than ever, all these dumbas**d 360 fanboy's defending kinect and it turns out over 77% of 360 owner's think kinect is over priced (considdering ever since the E3 announcment from 2009 and 2010 every 360 fanboy has been quick to defend natal/kinect) and only 61% are intrested in the voice control "yet again M$ fails to deliver, all you get is an over hyped pile of crap that no one want's" and only a very small 19% think kinect is good (typically there all fanboys).

now all 360 fanboys can shut the hell up about this stupid console war "the ps3 is in dead last" where as you M$ fanboy's fail to realise with both sales from the 360 and xbox 1 put together still cant amount to the huge success and sales of the playstation brand, just face fact's xbox is dead last and will never beat the sales achieved by sony with the ps2, and nintendo's wii.

good luck to the 61% of fat lazy couch potato's out there youll find kinect will help you gain even more weight and hopefully youll die of heart failure cause you too dam lazy to get off your as**s and exercise, you can clearly tell M$ is american "design somthing else that doesnt require any form of movement just your voice for control "that's the real selling point of kinect, not motion control just another excuse not to get up off the sofa"

i couldnt give a crap about move but at least its affordable and has some games that appeal to the hardcore gamer unlike kinect that has none. and you know microsoft will be focusing all its time for kinect so next year dont expect many triple A title's youll be lucky if you even get 1 (and no gears 3 is just hype gears 2 is boring and has constant server issues with the lobby system and gears 1 is old, only cosolation gears 1 is the best version as its the hardest to complete, i couldnt care less about graphics im only intrested in the gameplay)

Judging from the games shown so far, I'm sad to say I completely agree - I do not want to punch or kick the air.

The only decent things on Kinect are Dance Central and Ubi's fitness thing - and I'm not particularly interested in either.

lol its so funny watching 360 fanboys try and fail to defend kinect (if we really wanted motion controled consoles we would all buy wii's oh we have lol) £130 for a camera lol the most pointless device of 2010 goes to the 360 and kinect.
