Irrational's former Australian studio behind the revival of XCOM...

Yesterday's announcement of the XCOM revival did much to put 2K Marin in the spotlight.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K claimed in the original announcement.

However that's not strictly the true picture according to 1UP, who contacted 2K Games and discovered that it's the team in Australia who are heading up development on XCOM.

It's a fairly convoluted setup that needs a little explanation:

Irrational Games used to contain two studios, one based in Boston and one in Canberra, Australia.  The Boston studio became 2K Boston for a short period during the development of the original Bioshock before recently reverting back to its original guise and working on Ken Levine's mysterious title.  2K Marin was established shortly after the development of Bioshock with a small number of members from the Boston studio.

It's believed that the Australian studio has now been enveloped under the 2K Marin banner and is working on XCOM, presumably while the 2K Marin studio we initially belied to be working on the title begins work on Bioshock 3.

So in a way the original rumours that Irrational Games were working on an X-COM revival were fairly accurate, just not the studio headed by Levine.  It should be noted that the Australian studio did have some involvement during the development of Bioshock 2, one of five different teams who worked on the title.
