Surely not, another X-Men videogame, there must be a movie just around the corner...

Never one to let a good license go, Activision today confirmed the development of X-Men: The Official Movie Game (thankfully a working title), which promises to immerse players in an original storyline that provides the backdrop for the forthcoming feature-film and fills in details such as why Nightcrawler is absent from the film.

Co-written by Zak Penn (X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Chris Claremont, X-Men: The Official Movie Game makes the slightly preposterous claim of allowing players to truly command the powers of popular characters from the X-Men universe for the first time ever - so that wasn't the X-Men in the last few titles, or perhaps they just weren't really trying in ?

Players take on the role of Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman as they wield and upgrade their signature powers and manoeuvre through unique environments designed to showcase their Super Hero abilities - hmmmmm...

Although TVG will reserve judgement until we've actually had the chance to play it, X-Men: The Official Movie Game sounds suspiciously like every other uninspired movie tie-in, with the typical hyperbole thrown in for good measures.

Development on the seven different versions is occurring at five different development studios, which should hopefully support Activision's claims of exclusive console features and experiences - we just hope there's not another THAW/GUN 360 fiasco brewing.

TVG will have more on X-Men: The Official Movie Game (working title) shortly ahead of the game's release in May; let's just hope they suss out a name soon.
