Codemasters and Team 17 announce the development of Worms 4: Mayhem, whilst SEGA drop out of the picture...

Those worms refuse to die, as Codemasters today confirmed that it has partnered with Team 17 to bring Worms 4: Mayhem throughout 2005.

The Worms series finally entered into the third-dimension with mixed results through a partnership with SEGA; whilst Worms 3D was critically acclaimed for translating the 2D mechanics faithfully, many feel that the more recent release of the tactical RTS-like spin-off, Worms: Forts Under Siege, strayed too far away from the core formula.

Worms fans can however look forward to a return to the seriesâ?? trademark gameplay, and sees Team 17â??s core Worms design and development team regrouping for more explosive annelid action.

Worms 4: Mayhem is scheduled for release in Q2 2005 for the Playstation2, Xbox and PC, with players controlling the worms in single-player or four-player team games, to promptly knock ten shades of hell out of each other in open arenas.

For the first time in the illustrious Worms series, players can run riot and create their own weapons. Using a device known as the Weapons Factory, players can create their own weapons and revel in the self-satisfaction of annihilating opponents in your own unique way.

The full range of brilliantly conceived classic weapons return in addition to even more devilish devices, such as the Poison Arrow, Sentry Gun, Tail Nail and the Bovine Blitz, each of which open up exciting new gameplay possibilities and strategies.

Introducing another first, Worms 4: Mayhem will also allow you the chance to customise your worms, choosing from a selection of hands, faces, glasses and dying words â?“ all wrapped up in the Team 17 trademark humour.

The game is set across five themed zones, Jurassic, Camelot, Arabian, Construction and Wild West; whilst the single-player campaign encompasses a greater deal of variety through its objectives, such as recovering items or smashing scenery. The game features 25 single-player missions, each of which can be played in multiplayer in addition to 20 multiplayer-specific maps.

Weâ??ll have more information soon.
