Two years after its announcement, Blizzard reveals the current status of the World of Warcraft movie...
E3 2006 brought the one piece of news that would shift World of Warcraft addicts from their PCs, with an announcement that Legendary Pictures had signed the rights to produce a movie based on the Blizzard Entertainment property.
Since then however, very little information has seeped out to eagerly expectant fans. A joint Blizzard and Legendary pictures line up at the 2007 BlizzCon revealed that the movie would be set one year before the events of the all-conquering MMO from the point of view of the Alliance, but it remained very much a teasing hint of things to come.
So one year one, how are things progressing? By the looks of it, very slowly. TVG caught up with Blizzard Entertainment co-founder and vice president, Frank Pearce, at the Game Convention and asked about the current status of the feature film. He replied briefly:
"I think they're looking to assign a screenwriter and director to it right now...it's still really early."
News that a director and screenwriter still haven't signed on to create the $100 million live-action adaptation surely means that the 2009 planned release date will be missed, though with very little information to go on, it's anybody's guess when the lands of Azeroth will make it onto the silver screen.
Let's just hope it doesn't go the way of the Halo movie.

Corr, somebody really pissed that guy off. Still, he's kind of right: Warcraft does not neccesarily mean WOW. Still, I reckon the movie (if it does make it to the big screen, which is a big if) is likely to focus on the culture surrounding the MMO game rather than the previous RTS titles, even though the strategy games originally built up Warcraft's story canon.
