As Level 70 World of Warcraft fans charge through the tundra of Northrend today, they can take heart in knowing that more expansions will be coming from Blizzard in the future.
Speaking to TVG in the run up to the midnight launch of Wrath of the Lich King yesterday, Blizzard Chief Operating Officer, Paul Sams confirmed that their intentions are to “...continue to deliver great content into this product and into this universe, and we intend to do so in the form of ongoing content updates in between expansion sets, and also deliver incredible enhancements to the game with new content and features in the expansion sets.”
It's unclear where Blizzard will be taking fans in the next expansion set, but it's at least confirmation that the developer/publisher won't be deviating from the path any time soon.
Sams also confirmed that the unannounced MMO, which has long been hinted at, will be the last of Blizzard’s current projects to hit retail, after StarCraft II and Diablo III, adding that the long development cycle is because “...we’re not focused on just doing what will make us the most money; what we do is ask the developers what is it you want to make next.”
But with the unannounced MMO perhaps facing competition from the recently unveiled Star Wars: The Old Republic from EA and Bioware, what does Blizzard think about its future rival? “They have a couple of real key benefits; number one, they have a great team and a proven team – and that’s one of the key elements you must have to be successful in the MMO space,” said Sams. “They also have a great franchise that they’re going to be operating in; that’s another key element of success.”
Associate Producer on Wrath of the Lich King, Lee Sparks, also added, “I think that competition breeds ingenuity in us too. We like having other games to see and play as well, and it helps us too.”
The full interview is now available to view on TVG, where we ask Blizzard whether their unannounced MMO is an original brand, and who they believe their MMO rival is.
