Online ranking system, online badges and numerous tweaks in the 1.30 update...
Wipeout fans can look forward to a host of improvements heading to the futuristic racer courtesy of the 1.30 update.
Available from today at 5:00pm (GMT), the update introduces an Online Ranking system with over 50 ranks to progress through that takes into account your finishing position, speed class, and rank of opponents as you rise from a Wipeout Trainee to a Wipeout Legend.
A new podium screen now displays the top three positions after every online race, although regardless of your finish you'll now have the opportunity to win an 'online badge' in recognition of your performance on the track (there's 33 to collect).
The update also makes game invites a lot easier along with the ability to watch a race that has already begun.
Further tweaks include:
- HUD Weapon Hints on/off.
- Choose to create a Public, Friends only or Invite only game.
- Barrel Rolls on/off...
- Pilot Assist Allowed on/off.
- Number of laps (max 20).

Looks like pilot assist in online is fine, it slows you down a lot if you take corners sharply, so those who can handle not using it will actually have a slight advantage

Accessiblity is never a word that should never even be mentioned in the same breath as Wipeout - who are you a Sony marketing guy or something. Beyond the online issues with the Pilot Assist though (shouldn't have it), Wipeout HD is as good as I was hoping.

I'm with you about the pilot assist - BUT, feel that it should NOT be an option when playing ONLINE! Who ever heard of a public online game where you are able to use a handicap against others that don't know it. They should limit your speed a tad if you have to use pilot assist!!!

At least give us a online, multi-player, one-trach DEMO of the game in it's curent version! As long as the game supports the headsets and online chat function, if we hear an opponent hit the floor in the convulsing throws of a grand-mal seizure, we can pause the race and call 9-1-1 (after I've taken at least a one lap lead-- but that goes without saying, right?).
