Chart Attack: Wii Fit In Good Shape News

Nintendo's fitness trainer tops the charts for the second week running, CoD still holding on at No.2...

Wii Fit

Never underestimate the selling power of fitness products during the bloated month of January, as Wii Fit has proved for Nintendo by staying atop the UK charts for the second week running with a 21% rise in sales.

Even though Wii Fit has visited the top spot seven times since it was released last April, this is the first time that the balance board aided phenomenon has managed to hold on to No.1 for more than a single week.

Call of Duty: World at War is still doing the business for Activision Blizzard, staying at No.2 for the fourth week running. Since its release on November 14th, the World War II shooter has spent a total of six weeks at No.1 and five at No.2, never dropping below the top two spots.

EA follows up behind these two big hitters with three titles in the top five: Skate 2 is the highest new entry at No.3; previous No.1 FIFA 09 came in at No.4, and last week's No.3 Lord of the Rings: Conquest has dropped to No.5.

The remainder of Chart Track's all format top ten is filled with Wii/DS exclusives with Wii Play at No.6, My Fitness Coach at No.7, Mario Kart Wii at No.8, and Professor Layton and the Curious Village at No.10. Eidos' Tomb Raider: Underworld splits the pack at No.9 thanks mostly to last week's release of the PS2 version of the game.

Aside from the all format chart, Chart Track's figures for sales by individual format (which charts games according to unit sales for specific platfoms) places Nintendo's Wii atop the pile this week. The motion sensing home console is responsible for 13 titles on the top 40 this week, compared to the Xbox 360's 12:

This is in contrast to figures for the whole of January, where Microsoft's Xbox 360 had the strongest chart presence for the majority of the month. The success of Tomb Raider: Underworld's PS2 release provided the first PS2 game on the top 40 so far this year:

The Wii is great. The Wii Fit helps keep me active. Even though it is not as good as playing an actual sport, its a good alternative.

Been thinking of getting this. Heard both good n' bad reviews (and couple cautionary things from real fitness xprts). Sounds like they should've market Bal Board as new game component and the games as actual separate games/programs and let people be surprised at any weight loss seen rather than tout it as an exercise game-program thing. Too many opportunities for "slingshots" if ya know what I mean.
