US judge rules in favour of Half-Life developers Valve in damages case against publishers VU…
In a decision that paves the way for Valve to seek damages, Thomas Zilly, a Federal District Court Judge in Seattle, US has ruled that Counter-Strike publishers Vivendi-Universal were wrong to distribute copies of the game across cyber-cafes without the permission of the titleâ??s developer, Valve.
In a statement after the decision Gabe Newell, Founder and CEO of Valve, â??We're happy the court has affirmed the meaning of our publishing contractâ?¦This is good news for Valve and its cyber cafe partners around the world.â?
It also means that Valve is now the sole distributor of Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and Half-Life 2 to cyber-cafes. The company aims to accomplish this feat through the use of Steam, their online distribution system that also allows for a high-standard of protection against piracy of their titles. It was reported last week that Valve has shutdown 20,000 Steam accounts because of software piracy, specifically attempts with Half-Life 2.
No statement has been issued from VU, and Valve has not released details of further action against the publisher.
Weâ??ll have more news soonâ?¦
