Harmonix and MTV Games to develop standalone rhythm game in partnership with The Beatles...

MTV Games and Harmonix, in collaboration with Apple Corps Ltd., are to develop a standalone rhythm game based on The Beatles' back catalogue of music. Although it's currently slated for release next Christmas, no platforms for the game have been revealed at this point.

The project also lacks a working title, although we know that it won't be branded under MTV and Harmonix's Rock Band label (contrary to what many press outlets - TVG included - had assumed prior to this afternoon's announcement).

Music spanning The Beatles' portfolio of albums (from 'Please Please Me' to 'Abbey Road') will feature in the game, which will take on a similar rhythm game style to Harmonix's Rock Band games, although details on peripherals for the game are thin on the ground at this early stage.

"The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out," Sir Paul McCartney said.

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and Harmonix / Rock Band partnership," added Ringo.  "The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that The Beatles' legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in.  Let the games commence."

No details on that as yet. The Abbey Road DLC is due to come shortly after release though, so it obviously won't be integral to the boxed copy's career mode. It might have added story elements or something, but we'll have to wait for more info on that.

I think that for a full priced game, the song list is a little short. I love all the songs that Harmonix has chosen for the game, but only 45 songs can't really explain the whole career of The Beatles.

(One question, Will the downloadable content be usable in hte Story/Career mode of The Beatles; Rock Band?)
