Toby Gard reveals concept art that he drew at Crystal Dynamics, confirming that he couldn't go all the way with Lara...
Toby Gard, the creator of gaming's most famous heroine, Lara Croft, has revealed a batch of concept art that he drew at Crystal Dynamics. Most notably, one particular piece shows how far Gard went when he was asked to draw Lara naked during the development of Tomb Raider: Legend/Anniversary.
"I was asked to do Lara nude. This was as close as I would allow myself to go," Gard commented on his site, referring to the image opposite. The picture was posted late last year after Gard had decided to leave Eidos' Tomb Raider studio, Crystal Dynamics, having recently been promoted to the position of Lead Designer.
It's interesting that Gard was being asked to draw Lara Croft naked considering the lengths Eidos and Core Design went to in order to prevent this from happening during the heroine's 90s heyday.
The infamous 'Nude Raider' ring of websites, which posted naked fan art of Lara Croft online, were clamped down on by Eidos and Core Design for fear that fans of the series would 'inadvertently' stumble upon the pictures.
Of course, this was also an era when Lara Croft was appointed to the position, "Ambassador of British Scientific Excellence," by the then Science minister, Lord Sainsbury. All involved had seemingly failed to note that she was, a) a fictional character, and b) hadn't really demonstrated a high level of scientific aptitude in her various game appearances (with the one exception of Tomb Raider: Neutrino Oscillation Dynamics).

I dunno, I reckon that's a pretty good piece of art. Lara has definitely still got it.

I'm an avid Tomb Raider fan. After paying Legend I was disapointed, too much shooting and not enough raiding, the locales were not what you could call 'tombs' and were not big enough, the words short, straight and narrow come to mind. THEN they released Anniversary. This game is good, in fact its very good, the original Tomb Raider was and still is to me and many others the greatest game - ever! it was the whole package, being on your own, going to exotic locales traversing tombs, collecting things. Also the fact that there were hardly any combat and loads of exploring. The only gripes that I have with this game are the push button cut scenes, get them out the game and also they could make the areas BIGGER.

Great game but the timed shoot targets -> platform jumps in the great pyramid over the lava were stupidly difficult and annoying. It marred an otherwise great game. Tomb Raider is a puzzle game at it's heart and doing the same sequence over 50+ times until you get lucky and execute it *perfectly* isn't fun. Yes, I'm sure there are dozen of kids out there who will tell you it's easy but just because it technically do-able, doesn't make it easy. Don't take my word for it, read the other comments on the net. However, that criticism aside, the rest of the game is wonderfully done.

This game really brought back the memories of the original. Cant wait to see what they do in the next 10 years!
