Not having a movie release won't stop EA from banking on Lord of the Rings again this Christmas...

Despite the fact that we wonâ??t all be clamouring to the cinemas this Christmas to catch the latest Lord of the Rings film, game publishers show no signs of letting the franchise drop, as EA today announced a new title based around the trilogy.

Currently in development at EAâ??s Redwood Shores Studio for the Playstation2, Xbox, GameCube and GameBoy Advance; Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is billed as an RPG, where players assume the role of new characters, as they choose their own path through Middle-Earth whilst interacting with heroes and villains from the trilogy.

Based upon Peter Jacksonâ??s feature-film trilogy; The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age allows players to adventure through Middle-Earth building up a party of all-new characters. Although players battle on the side of the Fellowship, players can unlock additional encounters where they fight on the side of Sauron.

Within the game, players will interact with the characters of the Fellowship, taking on individual missions whilst intersecting the major events of the film trilogy that drive the story forward. EA promises us that players can expect to traverse through both familiar and seldom-glimpsed locations, as they fight the demonic Balrog in the Mines of Moria, defend the fallen city of Osgiliath or try to destroy Helmâ??s Deep.

The game makes use of a turn-based battle system, although specific details on these are not yet known; however you can expect more information very soon.
