Square-Enix Nurtures SpeedTree News

The Last Remnant gains realistic foliage courtesy of SpeedTree technology...

Continuing their adoption of Western technologies, Square-Enix recently confirmed an agreement with Interactive Data Visualization to incorporate the SpeedTree RT technology in the forthcoming Xbox 360/PS3 title The Last Remnant.

Providing middleware to embed varied and realistic foliage into videogames, SpeedTree's capabilities was originally demonstrated in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and has since seen numerous agreements with a huge range of publishers and developers.

"Since it's able to render not only a large number, but a large variety of trees quickly, SpeedTree has really been an important tool for us in developing THE LAST REMNANT," said Square Enix Chief Artist Kimihiko Miyamae.

The first title to be based upon Unreal Engine 3 resulting from an agreement with Epic Games, The Last Remnant is scheduled for a simultaneous release in North America and Japan on Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 - obviously no word on Europe as of yet.
