After rumours of his departure from Team Ico, Fumito Ueda confirms that The Last Guardian's development is ongoing...

Fumito Ueda, the Director and Lead Designer behind Sony's critically revered PS2 games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has confirmed that his next opus, The Last Guardian has not been cancelled despite rumours of his departure from its Team Ico studio.

"I've received a lot of questions... there's no need to worry, as The Last Guardian is still in production," Ueda-san tweeted according to a translation from Andriasang (the site confirmed that he'd been absent from Twitter since rumours of his departure first surfaced last week).

According to those earlier reports from Eurogamer, which were from a withheld source, Ueda-san has departed Sony and the Team Ico studio to pursue personal projects (the developer originally joined Sony in 1997). He will, however, continue to work on The Last Guardian up until its completion on a freelance basis.

Ueda-san's departure from Team Ico is allegedly one of the reasons for The Last Guardian's drawn-out development. The game has been a no-show at high-profile industry events since its last appearance at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2010, where it was also slated for a 2011 release that's since been delayed into an unknown time-frame.

Despite Ueda-san's tweet confirming that the game is still in production, he stops short of clarifying or denying the speculation that emerged last week, so there's still no official word on his current role at Team Ico. On a brighter note, however, today is the tenth anniversary of Ico's release in Japan – purchasing the revamped Team Ico HD Collection for PS3 would be a fairly apt way of celebrating that fact if you're yet to play this masterpiece.
