The History Channel hopes to Veni, Vidi, Vici in May, with a new action strategy game from Slitherine...

Italian publisher Black Bean has today confirmed that The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome will heading for PlayStation2, PC, and PSP on May 7th.

Charting over 100 key battles from the Roman Empire, including Julius Caesar's invasion of Britain and the early wars against the Samnite tribes, Great Battles of Rome is an action strategy game that includes segments from The History Channel archives - offering that 'learn as you loot' aspect to the experience.

Announcing the game, Marco Minoli, Head of Marketing at Black Bean said: "We are proud of this collaboration between The History Channel, Slitherine and Black Bean enabling us to publish a licensed video game with excellent graphics and realism. The endorsement of such a prestigious brand, reinforces and confirms Black Bean's global credentials as one of the most innovative and respected publishing houses in the business."

Iain McNeil of Slitherine, developers of The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome comment: "We have been working with The History Channel and our partner Black Bean to bring the highest quality and exciting historical video games to our audience. Our relationship with The History Channel has enabled us to use material from their archives that we could only dream about. This builds on our previous range of historical strategy games and brings a new dimension to the genre"

"We are very pleased to be working with Slitherine and Black Bean on the development of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of Rome, the first international console game to be released under our brand. The History Channel is always looking for ways to make history experiential for our viewers, and by giving them the power to build their own armies and plot battle strategy, this game truly allows players to be a part of the building of the Roman Empire." said Carrie Trimmer, Director of Licensing at The History Channel.

The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome follows on from an earlier North American release, The History Channel: Civil War, which was launched by Activision across the pond on Xbox 360, PlayStation2, and PC in 2006.

I wold agree with comment No:5. Not a good game! Just got it for Xmas and never heard of it before. Very clumsy and plays itself to most extent. Descriptions on how to play are useless and they forgot to explain what sysmbols at bottom of the screen mean!

Look, this game is not as it looks from the box and description! If you think you might enjoy it, rent it first! The controls and interface (and the graphics, and the sense you have of being able to influence how the battles progress...) are not good. Very "not good". Looks and feels more like a mediocre PC game of a decade ago than a PS2 title.
