Scandinavian studio behind Syndicate revival and Bourne title confirms one has been dropped...
Starbreeze Studios, creators of the pretty enjoyable Chronicles of Riddick and the so-so adaptation of The Darkness, were hard at work on two projects for EA, rumoured to be the next Bourne title and a new Syndicate.
The emphasis is on 'were' as the Scandinavian developer recently announced that one of the projects has been cancelled, in order to focus specifically on the other.
"We will continue to focus only on a big production together with EA," Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson claimed in a Scandinavian release (translated by Google). "Our relationship with EA is stronger than ever, and the aim now is to spend more resources on the game that demonstrated the greatest potential. This game is already in full production."
Neither Starbreeze or EA have commented on which title the announcement refers to, although seeing as neither title was officially revealed it's hardly surprising. Given one title is based around a lucrative license and the other based on a series we haven't seen for 14 years, we suspect the anguished screams of an enemy agent engulfed in flames won't be heard anytime soon.
Following the announcement, the Los Angeles Times appears to suggest it's the Bourne title that faces the scrap, citing conflicting information surrounding the state of the project.
One EA source claims "there are currently no Ludlum-related games in the works", however an update to the article maintains that EA and the Ludlum Estate are still in discussions surrounding a game based on the Bourne franchise.
Uncertainty surrounds the state of a fourth Bourne movie, with lead actor Matt Damon claiming he doesn't want to continue without Paul Greengrass. Having directed both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, Greengrass has claimed he doesn't want to return to the series. The impasse, however, recently led to suggestions of a prequel movie starring a new lead actor and under the helm of a new director. Perhaps the uncertainty facing a new movie and the likely long timeframe led to EA's decision.
Either way it doesn't sound like a game in "full production" that Starbreeze's announcement signifies, so perhaps there's still some hope for the Syndicate revival.
