We take an early look at this Star Wars RPG packed with potential.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a very interesting prospect, being the first fully featured role-playing game that is set in the Star Wars universe. Given that it is developed by Bioware, producers of some of the finest PC role playing games, any wannabe Jedi master should be having palpitations at the mere thought of this game.

Now this game will not be out until the end of this year at the earliest, and the chances are that it will slip into 2003. This wait should not be too bad however as Bioware seem to be aiming high, producing what should be a complete Jedi experience. We know that the game is set 3000 years before the films, therefore whilst some locations may be recognisable there will be no characters that we love – or loathe – to immediately identify with. This allows for much more freedom with the plot, and perhaps more importantly, for the plot not to be known before you start, which is normally a problem with Star Wars games.

Look at the grass!

In the Star Wars universe the game takes place at a time where Jedi’s, both light and dark a numerous and there is heavy fighting between the Sith and nice good Jedi’s. Now, what would be interesting is if your characters alignment to good or evil was not pre-determined and your actions in the game decide whether you follow the example of Darth Vader and become evil, or manage to pull of an Obi Wan and become a great, good Jedi. However this is pure speculation on our part, but it is opportunities like this that make the idea of this game so appealing and it should be very interesting to find out how your character develops.

It does seem that you can decide how you want to play the game, as you don’t have a set character, as is the case with most console role-playing games. Rather you create your own character, choose the race, sex and class – which determines their attributes, as well as their outfits and, hopefully, such petty details as the colour and design of their lightsabres.

Nice lighting

Your character’s quest is not going to be a lonely experience as you will spend a fair amount of your time travelling in a party with two other characters. One assumes the small party will let you become familiar with your companions, both from a plot perspective and a gameplay one. Travelling with a couple of other characters means that there should be plenty of development of all roles probably via the mini quests that can be completed en route to the main over arching goal. Any specifics regarding plot and characters seem to be totally under wraps at the moment, and probably won’t be revealed for some time.

Depth of character development in the plot will be matched by the depth in the combat engine. The prospect of cinematic real-time battles with a small tightly focused group of Jedi is very appealing. It seems that you will control your character directly, performing various attacks, stunts and defensive moves – and of course cool Jedi mind stuff - whilst your companions are controlled by the computer. You can apparently issue commands to your fellow Jedi, but quite how much control you will have over their actions remains to be seen. What we know for sure is that with the technology behind this game the battles should look almightily impressive, even if we don’t know yet exactly how the combat system will work.

Some big tree houses

Although it is not out for a while Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is looking, as you can see in the screenshots, very impressive. Lots of polygons form a good base and Bioware have added a good sprinkling of lovely lighting, high-resolution textures, bump mapping and a sense of scale that will produce some no doubt stunning locations. The characters too will look good with fully detailed and animated faces, although to be honest this is pretty much what we expect in this day and age. Hopefully if there is full speech in the game, we will see some impressively rendered real-time cut-scenes showing off the detail in the character models and some high quality animation.

At this point in time, because of the secrecy surrounding the project, we can’t tell you too much more about the gameplay specifics. A few little titbits are known, Bioware have let it slip that there will be a lot of sub-quests and that there may be the odd slightly more arcade style elements to break up the more traditional role-playing gameplay, which is the base of the game. We don’t know any specifics, but the mere fact that Bioware are looking to produce something that covers a lot of bases within the remit of a role playing game should ensure that this is a comprehensive and impressive game. Most of this is based on optimism that this will be a good game because of the developers and the sheer fact that being a Jedi in a role playing game should be damn cool, to put it bluntly.

KOTOR 1 was way better then KOTOR 2! It had loads of cool characters like Bastila, Mission and HK-47, and i loved the fact that u were really Revan (which is a perfect name cuz its both a guys and a girls name :)). The story line was great to, going to different plants to go after all the peaces of the Star Map, my varourite place was Korriban cuz of the Sith Acamdemy :D. And the romance in it was pritty good too, how u could fall in love with Bastila (if u were a guy) and Carth (if u were a girl). The second game however was not so good, it had some great characters like Atton, Mira and Kreia but the story line seemed to miss alot, but that was cuz of loads of cut content. But still the second game was pritty good, i cant wait for KOTOR 3!!! So i give 10/10 for KOTOR 1 and 7/10 for KOTOR 2.
