LucasArts signs the Timesplitters and Haze team to create an as yet untitled next-gen game...

LucasArts has today announced that they've signed a deal with Free Radical Design that will see the Timesplitters studio create a new next-gen title.

Besides being for the next-gen systems, further information remains a mystery, but the news comes hot on the heels of LucasArts' deal with Day 1 Studios to produce another untitled game.

"Free Radical has always been about titles with great gameplay and innovative design," said Peter Hirschmann, Vice President of Product Development at LucasArts. "In the battle for videogame quality, these guys are at the front of the line. This team's pedigree is one of the best in the business."

"In recent years, LucasArts has established itself as one of the hottest publishers on the planet," said Steve Ellis, Director at Free Radical, "We're honored that they're every bit as interested to be working with us as we are to be working with them."

We'll have more news shortly...

I should think so (if it does get released that is). Battlefront without multiplayer would be a bit like a Sunday lunch with no gravy - the series is focused on multiplayer gameplay after all.

Nobody knows if it's still in development, although we do know that Free Radical was working on it before the developer was acquired by Crytek.

Chances are that the project is in development elsewhere (the best bet is Rebellion), and I can't see LucasArts just chucking out all the assets that Free Radical had compiled up until the end of 2008.

At the start of last year, LucasArts announced that The Force Unleashed was the fastest selling StarWars game in the company's history. I'm fairly certain that the previous record holder was Battlefront 2.

So, yeah, both games have their fans, but it seems a bit far-fetched to claim that Battlefront 3 will have more fans than The Force Unleashed 1 and 2 (And that's assuming that the project hasn't been canned).

Battlefront 2 has had a pretty formidable online community over the years though, with a resilient fan-base who still play the multiplayer and have ensured that the servers stay open.

If this game turns out to be as good as it looks it will probably make millionsof dollars and set a HARD act to follow.

Development has only officially stopped at the former Free Radical Design. The project was quite far along there though, judging by the leaked footage, so in all probability LucasArts has passed the game assets onto another developer (it wouldn't just drop one of its strongest IPs).

The favourite is Rebellion at the moment and we've quizzed the studio's David Brickley on the matter, but he wasn't revealing anything.
