Sources indicate that the next instalment in LucasArts' Star Wars: Battlefront series has been canned...

Gamers may have to wait until 2012 or beyond for LucasArts' next bite at the Star Wars: Battlefront apple if murmurings from Slant Six - the studio that had allegedly taken the helm of the third game in the series - are to be believed.

Sources close to the studio have indicated to Kotaku that the game, which was called Star Wars: Battlefront Online, had been in pre-production but was canned after LucasArts couldn't fit the title into its crowded slate of Star Wars games projected for 2011 releases. The project is now "on ice" according to the rumours.

Although Star Wars: Battlefront Online was never officially revealed, it was the first substantial news we'd heard of a new Battlefront game since Battlefront III footage was leaked from Free Radical Design as the studio closed its doors in early 2009 and was subsequently acquired by Crytek.

However, the casting director who recently revealed that he'd worked on a Battlefront 3 project is alleged to have been referring to Slant Six's Battlefront Online game. Whether Battlefront Online was building on the work started by Free Radical remains unclear.

I should think so (if it does get released that is). Battlefront without multiplayer would be a bit like a Sunday lunch with no gravy - the series is focused on multiplayer gameplay after all.

Nobody knows if it's still in development, although we do know that Free Radical was working on it before the developer was acquired by Crytek.

Chances are that the project is in development elsewhere (the best bet is Rebellion), and I can't see LucasArts just chucking out all the assets that Free Radical had compiled up until the end of 2008.

At the start of last year, LucasArts announced that The Force Unleashed was the fastest selling StarWars game in the company's history. I'm fairly certain that the previous record holder was Battlefront 2.

So, yeah, both games have their fans, but it seems a bit far-fetched to claim that Battlefront 3 will have more fans than The Force Unleashed 1 and 2 (And that's assuming that the project hasn't been canned).

Battlefront 2 has had a pretty formidable online community over the years though, with a resilient fan-base who still play the multiplayer and have ensured that the servers stay open.

If this game turns out to be as good as it looks it will probably make millionsof dollars and set a HARD act to follow.

Development has only officially stopped at the former Free Radical Design. The project was quite far along there though, judging by the leaked footage, so in all probability LucasArts has passed the game assets onto another developer (it wouldn't just drop one of its strongest IPs).

The favourite is Rebellion at the moment and we've quizzed the studio's David Brickley on the matter, but he wasn't revealing anything.
