Bethesda acquires the Star Trek license and announces two new games based on the franchise...

Following reports from the US last week that a new Star Trek game was in development, Bethesda has today confirmed its acquisition of the Star Trek license from CBS Enterprises, and has announced twp new titles based on the franchise.

Currently in development at Mad Doc Software, Star Trek Legacy for Xbox 360 and PC takes place across all five Star Trek series from The Original Series to Enterprise, and sees players take control of the Federation forces as they battle against a range of enemies. The game will feature space phenomena including nebulas and wormholes, as well featuring online play via Xbox Live.

Bethesda also confirmed work on a second Star Trek game, Star Trek Tactical Assault, will be released on PSP and DS and is currently in development at Quicksilver Software. Based in The Original Series, players will take part in strategic battles against the Klingons both offline and via Wi-Fi multiplayer.

Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us," said Todd Vaughn, Vice President of Development for Bethesda Softworks. "We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name.

A European publisher is yet to be confirmed for either game, which have both been pencilled in for a September release; we'll have more news from the final frontier in the coming weeks...
