New title from gaming luminary Tim Schafer is announced...

Tim Schafer’s Double Fine studio has revealed details of its next release, Stacking: a puzzle adventure game involving Russian ‘matryoshka’ dolls and farting.

Stacking will be a downloadable title, due for PSN and XBLA in Spring 2011. In the game, you play as a small Russian doll with a limited set of abilities; by ‘stacking’ yourself inside bigger dolls you can use their abilities to solve puzzles.

Unlike the arbitrary idiosyncratic approach to puzzle solutions taken by early adventure games, Stacking allows players to solve its problems in a variety of ways, for instance choosing to ‘stack’ on an attractive lady doll to distract a guard, rather than simply sneaking past him. Some dolls also have the ability to burp and fart.

Despite receiving significant critical acclaim for titles like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, Schafer is yet to produce a game that has achieved significant commercial success. Double Fine recently released Costume Quest for XBLA and PSN.
