Kaz Hirai is focussed on combined potential of PS3 and NGP...
Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai has reiterated the company’s 10-year commitment to the PS3, saying that a near-future PS4 isn’t even under debate internally at Sony.
"As regards home consoles, the PS3 was put into business in 2006, and it has a 10 year life cycle," Hirai-san told PC Impress Watch (translated by Eurogamer).
"This means that we aren't even at the halfway point.” he explained.
"I think the value of the PS3 will continue to rise. Because of this, a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now. That is to say, we are still concentrating fully upon the PS3. Right now, I appeal to you to think of the PS3 and NGP as a new, co-operative partnership."
Sony released the PS1 in 1994 and the PS2 6 years later in 2000. The PS3 was released 6 years after that in 2006. Both PS1 and PS2 retained significant market share and a degree of software support for some time after the release of their successors. It seems unlikely that Sony will continue its traditional pattern and release a PS4 in 2012. Much higher development costs, and an increasingly fragmented and unpredictable market are significantly deterrents to launching new home console hardware in the short term. The NGP is set for a ‘holiday 2011’ launch.

I cant imagine sony putting the ps4 into the public, for another 5 years. people are still buying and playing ps3's and even ps2's. In my opinion we won't need next generation consoles for a long time.

hi definition does not = next gen gaming.
it's merely a small part of it. the wii is included in this 'next gen' bracket we are in, and it doesn't do hd.
