SEGA Officially Announces Sonic Unleashed News

By Chris Leyton on 03/04/2008

Following last month's leaked footage and info, SEGA finally announces Sonic's return to form...

We told you Sonic Unleashed was worth keeping an eye on when we first spotted it last month. Today, with the game officially unwrapped, we're prepared to stick our heads on the block and say Sonic Unleashed will be a true return to form for the blue hedgehog after many years of anguish.

Having finally settled the issues caused by Yuji Naka's resignation and the confusion that followed, Sonic Unleashed is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation3, Wii, and PlayStation2 at the very capable Sonic Team.

The result of three years of development, Sonic Unleashed introduces the powerful new 'Hedgehog Engine', which blends the 2D action and 3D camera flourishes that will finally bring classic Sonic gameplay to the home consoles. In development for the past three years, the Hedgehog Engine easily blends the best of 2D and 3D, bringing seamless multi path choices to the signature 2D gameplay.

The story focuses on Sonic's attempts to track down the Chaos Emeralds in an attempt to piece together the fragments of the world that was broken apart by the evil Dr Eggman.

Multi path choices are promised to provide depth and variety to the on-rails action, while day and night cycles promise a "completely original way of playing Sonic" along with all new combat, movement and functional abilities in classic Sonic style. Seven stages are set to feature in the final game, with the promise of four different game modes - we're guessing online functionality will feature in some form.

"By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love" commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. "In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic... making this his most exciting adventure yet!"

I think this game is very good, is kind of hard to get the medals sometimes, but thats why I like this game, is challenging.  I love the graphics and the music.   It is worth buying it.  I don't know why it is getting such low scores in other sites.   In my opinion is the second best sonic game, after Sonic Adventures for Dreamcast.

Oh yeah of course - or it's just possible that people can't see the wood through the trees when it coems to Sonic, and nobody actually realises what a decent Sonic game is about nowadays?

OMG - the free roam sections are where Sonic Unleashed is AWFUL.  Have you forgotten the town sections in Sonic Unleashed where you're free to wander around, talk with people and do side missions?

Sonic NEEDS to be a linear game to work, pure as.

oh i forgot to mention its only similarity with all the other sonic games is you never run out of lives and its too easy, hell i completed it in less than a day but luckily the game was reduced after just 1 week of it comming out from £40 to £20 i thought they only reduce prices if a game doesnt sell very well lol no supprise im gonna take it back and get my money back, after youve completed it what else is there to do as theres no online/off line multiplayer and once youve completed it youll take it out and soon itll have a few inches of dust on it before you think about playing it again.

i agree with ign sonic unleashed is nothing spectacular, is anoying in many places, and not what you could call perfect. ive played almost all the sonic games from sonic 1 in 1991 to sonic unleashed but it will never be a mario beater cause the games still lineir (not free roam) looks like the only fans are mainly kids who wernt even born when the first sonic came out (on the megadrive/genisis) basicly untill sega develop sonic into a free roam game especially with the 360/ps3 next gen surely this should have been bigger WAY BIGGER but thats what happens when they develop for last gen consoles it restrics what they can do for next gen just look at test drive unlimited on the ps2 and compare it to the 360 (just drop the old gen consoles and maybe we will get a perfect sonic game.
