SEGA releases a demo for Sonic Generations as part of the hedgehog's 20th anniversary celebrations...
Sonic the Hedgehog officially turned 20 today and, as part of the celebrations that SEGA has in store, the publisher has taken everyone by surprise and released a demo for Sonic Generations way ahead of the game's planned launch in the autumn.
The demo features Sonic Generations' remake of the iconic Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic of 1991, and is available over both PSN and Xbox Live (cue it up for download here). VG247 has stuck up footage, which you can see below [spoiler warning: it looks incredible].
Eurogamer has also confirmed that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the demo support 3D, with the PS3 utilising 'full' stereoscopic effects and the Xbox 360 version using a 'side-by-side' technique.
Sonic Generations features two different Sonics, classic and contemporary, through gameplay that's a mash-up of traditional 2D platforming and the 3D approach used by recent titles like Sonic Colours and Sonic Unleashed. Each Sonic reverts to his relative abilities, so that classic Sonic spin-dashes while modern Sonic uses homing attacks.
The demo is for a limited time only - gamers will only be able to play it until July 12th when all downloaded copies will be disabled.
