SEGA unveils plans to release selected titles over XBLA and PSN from its back-catalogue of Dreamcast games...
Imagine our excitement to receive a press release from SEGA saying, "SEGA - Dreamcast Returns - Announcement," only a matter of days before E3 is due to kick-off. In actuality, this announcement is not that SEGA is returning to the console race, but that it's bringing a number of its classic Dreamcast games to XBLA and PSN, starting with Sonic Adventure this Autumn (on the Dreamcast's 11th anniversary no less, which seems like a bit of a curious number to choose).
Crazy Taxi will then follow Sonic Adventure onto the same digital platforms at a later date, but SEGA isn't stopping there. Both of these titles, which had previously been pegged for PSN and XBLA in various rumours, are only the beginning of a larger Dreamcast renaissance for SEGA as it seems the publisher has similar plans for many more of its Dreamcast back-catalogue titles. While the company has not confirmed any further titles at this stage, we can't help but ask the obvious question: Shenmue?
“The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.”
Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be buoyed by Achievement and Trophy support, high-res visuals and surround sound, as well as online leaderboards.
