Codemasters fight off the challenge for an impressive action/startegy title from 1C...

Codemasters today confirmed that it has secured the publishing rights to a new tactical/action game for the PC from Ukrainian developers 1C and Best Way.

‘Soldiers: Heroes of WWII’ as it is now known is believed to have been fiercely fought over by a number of interested publishers, however with previous ties to the Russian outfit Codemasters emerged victorious.

Claiming to be a third-person tactical action game that plays out like a blockbuster war movie complete with stunning 3D visuals, players are pitched headlong into the war torn battlefields of Europe as you command a highly trained team of Special Forces behind enemy lines.

The game features over 25 non-linear missions, which we’ve been assured can be played out in any way you see fit, whether you chose to go in as silent as the night or guns blaring for an all-out assault. Despite the obvious comparisons to the Commandos series, we’ve been told that this isn’t a “puzzle game where the ‘save’ key is everything”.

Players can take control of British, US, German or Russian forces, along with a wide selection of WWII vehicles, weapons and units for you to take control over.

However perhaps the most interesting aspect is the remarkable physics engine, which allows for such remarkable features as a fully destructible environment that becomes scarred as your artillery makes its mark and changes the terrain with shell-holes and trenches.

The control method caters for both the tactical and action elements, as such using the RTS inspired ‘Team Mode’ to command and move entire units or take ‘Direct Control’, where you jump into the thick of the action, get your hands dirty and take control of a single soldier.

If Best Way can successfully merge tactile depth with the thrills and excitement of a 3D shooter then ‘Soldiers: Heroes of WWII’ should be something very special indeed.

We’ll be checking out ‘Soldiers: Heroes of WWII’ on Friday when we’ll bring you further impressions of the game in action; until then make sure to check out the screens
