Soldier of Fortune 2 Review

a name="#jump_top">
-

Soldier of Fortune 2 Preview

Another top quality sequel was on show at E3 this year. The original Soldier of Fortune gained a big following before its release and has improved from there. Most fans of the FPS genre have been awaiting this game along with “Return to castle Wolfenstein” and “Alien V Predator 2”, which one will end up being the best only time will tell.

The original Soldier of Fortune had a great story line to backup the top quality gameplay, thankfully this seems to continue with a film type story line in the sequel.

The game engine the developers have used is the popular Quake 3 engine, which is making its debut in almost all new First Person Shooters. The Quake3 engine allows the developers to have a lot of flexibility in what they can do with the game.

The new title features new abilities for the star of the game “John Mullins” who is a military consultant working for a top-secret anti terrorist group, that are only known as “The Shop”. It is your job as Mullins to ensure that you overcome all of the problems and missions that you're faced with.

There are some great features in the game that really do allow you to alter the environment that you are playing in. At E3 I was talking to another member of the press whilst waiting to play the game and I asked him what he thought of it, he said his first impressions were that the game had only been given a few surface touches to make it look better. Just after he said that one of the demonstrators got hold of the controls. In the game he proceeded down a river until he came to a hut on stilts, he then pulled out his grenade launcher and blew two of the stilts up. The hut then toppled into the river making some environmental changes including the shape of the river and how the water was flowing. The level of detail makes for great gameplay and will also allow you to distract guards from a range so that they go and see what is happenings instead of keeping their eyes on you.

Like most FPS they all play very similair with very few distinctive features however the graphics are some of the best that I have seen with the level detail being astonishingly high. One instance of this would be that if you shoot into the side of a wooden box and then look at it from the side you will be able to see all of the splinters that the bullet made as it went into the box.

Comments
For me Soldier of Fortune is definitively one on my shopping list even if it is another FPS to add to my collection. As the game get's deeper into development we will bring you all the latest details.

The game is set for a Spring 2002 release.

Kris Massey

»
