Nintendo's fortunes in Japan continues as strong sales for Link's latest adventure emerge...

Nintendo needed a killer application; with rave reviews and high expectation, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker has done exactly that. On it’s first week of sale, the eagerly awaited return of Link has shifted an unbelievable 407,700 units in Japan, making it the fastest selling title this year.

The Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution franchise looks like showing no signs of stopping, despite EA’s recent claims; as the recent release of Winning Eleven 6: Final Edition shifted an impressive 336,500 units to claim second place. Winning Eleven 6: Final Edition is a Japan only release, and contains the improvements that Konami made to the European release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2 along with online features.

Nintendo’s good fortunes continued, with the news that both Pokemon Ruby (180,200) and Pokemon Sapphire (180,600) have shifted over 1million titles each in four weeks. Mario Party 4 has continued to sell strong, sailing past the 400,000 mark with sales of 48,500 units.

Other new entries faired worse in the face of stiff competition; Capcom’s PS2 horror/adventure shifted a measly 50,000 units on its first week,

Interestingly there have been some major discrepancies between the two major sources of Japan’s charts; Mediaworks compiled a completely different chart this week and suggested that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker only shifted 294,318 units!

It will also be interesting to see how The Wind Waker performs in continual sales, with such a strong incentive to pre-order the title, it’s been suggested that everyone who wants this game would have gone out and pre-ordered the title immediately; next weeks charts will be an interesting read.
