Volition working on the next instalment of the open-world franchise for Xbox 360 and PlayStation3...

THQ has today confirmed that the next instalment in the Saints Row franchise is underway at internal studio, Volition, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 with a scheduled release during 2008.

The first title, which paid homage to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto franchise, introduced a separate selection of multiplayer gametypes and clan support from the single-player campaign, though it was criticised for not evolving the open-world genre far enough in the leap to the next-generation.

"The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre's first-ever online multiplayer," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. "The game's worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again."

Following the release of their financial results in a conference call, THQ executives confirmed that the PlayStation3 port of the original Saints Row, which was announced back in January, has been canned.

No dude. Saint's Row 2's co-op is available either online or via system link. There is no split-screen or single system co-op option so, if you're playing offline, then you have to link up two consoles locally to play co-op.
