Sony patents brain stimulating technology - if only Morpheus could read this...

If you think that The Matrix was a movie trilogy that explored the sc-fi of total immersive worlds and brain trickery, then think again. New Scientist magazine is reporting on the latest Sony patent that will excite some and scare the living hell out of others.

According to the report, the technique patented by Sony essentially triggers what has been described as â??sensory experiencesâ? through (and here comes the science bit), â??â?¦a device that fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brainâ?¦[with results] ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds. This could give blind or deaf people the chance to see or hear.â?

New Scientist reports that the application for the patent took place back in 2000, and was finally granted in March 2003; subsequent additions have been made since although Sony have been quick to note that the technology is still far in the future. Elizabeth Boukis, spokeswoman for Sony Electronics said, â??There were not any experiments doneâ?¦This particular patent was a prophetic invention. It was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

So who knowsâ?¦perhaps in twenty years time weâ??ll be jacking into the PlayStation8 with immersive graphics and audio â?“ cool...
