Resident Evil 5 Producer, Jun Takeuchi, explains Capcom's decision to set the game in Africa...
The decision to set Resi 5 in Africa certainly got us pretty excited here at TVG and the game's Producer, Jun Takeuchi, has now explained what was behind the decision while also dropping some other crumbs of info along the way (which we lapped up like famished hyenas).
Takeuchi told Game Videos, "The main reason we chose Africa for the setting of Resident Evil 5 is actually from a clue that came up in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, where it was revealed that Africa was the origin of the Proginator Virus, which is the origin of all the viruses that appear in the series. So, when we were deciding to focus the story on the origins of the virus, we pretty much had no choice but to set it in Africa."
The game's Producer also revealed where Resi 5 fits in the series' timeline and whether it will touch on the Umbrella Corporation: "In terms of the timeline, the game takes place shortly after Resident Evil 4 and I think that over the course of the game you will find out exactly what happened to Umbrella and where the story is going to go from here for the continuation of the series."
Set 10 years after the events of the first Resi game, the series' S.T.A.R.S. organisation is now defunct although Chris Redfield will still be a lead character in the game. Takeuchi revealed that you can see insignia on Chris' arm in the trailers which is a logo for a new organisation in the Resi series.
"Who that organisation is and what they're up to..." Takeuchi teases, "That's something that's going to be another important element in the story."
While Takeuchi wouldn't reveal any details on the female character that was exposed in the latest trailer, he did say that the key word for more details on her role is "E3".

With the emphasis on action in Resident Evil 5, clunky controls are a bit of a problem. I'll agree they are a trademark charatceristic of the series, but if Resident Evil is headed further down a Gears of War route, then it needs to be looked at.
Personally I'd rather they kept the controls and toned down the action in place of some added significance on the puzzle count...

What a load of abject [#@!?]e, "the clunky controls can be excused" theyre supposed to be clunky genius its how the resident evil games are meant to feel. As are the menus. I for one as a die hard fan would be seriously pissed off if the controls and menus were changed. fair point about the puzzles tho, im guessing they were removed to allow for coop play.

But surely a good story is like the icing on a cake? I enjoyed RE4 more than 5, because I felt the intrigue of the series heading into new territory. By comparison RE5 felt completely generic.

"if no-one likes this game because of the story line get a book" then by your logic..we should just play space invaders!
