Chart Attack: Resident Evil 5 Maintains Top Spot Feature
This week's look at the UK All Format Top 40 reveals very little change from last week's...
By Chris LeytonPosted: 23/03/2009
Despite the constant pressure from Wii Fit and a 52% decrease in sales compared to last week, Capcom celebrated a second week at the top of the UK All Formats charts with Resident Evil 5.
Sales of Wii Fit dropped by 9% but the constant supply of stock secured its place at No.2, while Nintendo also took the third spot with Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
The highest entry from last week's releases was WWE: Legends of Wrestlemania at No.4, with sales split pretty evenly between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 versions. Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X drops two places to No.5.
Despite earning widespread critical acclaim, Rockstar Games' GTA: Chinatown Wars fails to have the sales impact that you'd expect from the franchise, debuting at No.6 in the charts. Information from Chart-Track suggests that the series' debut on the DS only managed to achieve half the first week sales of GTA: Vice City Stories when it appeared on the PSP back in 2006 - ouch!
A resurgent Streetfighter IV jumps straight back into the charts at No.7 - remember to enter our competition to win a framed concept sketch signed by the game's producer. The TV ads urging everybody to buy their mothers a DS with Brain Training appear to have done the trick for Nintendo, with sales of the DS title jumping by 117% compared to last week and earning a spot at No.8 in the process.
Finally the Top 10 is rounded off with the constant appearance of FIFA 09 and Call of Duty: World at War at No.9 and No.10 respectively.
Amongst last week's releases, SEGA's MadWorld failed to ignite hardcore Wii owners' appetites appearing way outside the Top 10 at No.34. Despite appearing at No.1 in the PSP chart, Sony's Resistance: Retribution fails to make a mark in the All Format Top 40 - and to think we really believed that the PSP might finally have its first placement of 2009. EA Games' entertaining Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure also fails to cause a splash, only reaching No.15 in the DS charts. Finally, Ubisoft's Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars reaches No.21 in the DS chart and No.23 on the Wii chart, failing to make an impact on the All Format Top 40.
Sales By Format
The number of DS titles featured in the Top 40 continues to increase, proving the handheld's dominance on the UK charts. The number of Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 titles continues to remain steady, although the latter has seen a slight drop-off at the expense of more DS titles featured in the Top 40.
Empire: Total War and Singstar Queen provide the PC and PS2's solitary appearances on the charts, while PSP titles once again fail to have an impact despite the release of Resistance: Retribution.

With the emphasis on action in Resident Evil 5, clunky controls are a bit of a problem. I'll agree they are a trademark charatceristic of the series, but if Resident Evil is headed further down a Gears of War route, then it needs to be looked at.
Personally I'd rather they kept the controls and toned down the action in place of some added significance on the puzzle count...

What a load of abject [#@!?]e, "the clunky controls can be excused" theyre supposed to be clunky genius its how the resident evil games are meant to feel. As are the menus. I for one as a die hard fan would be seriously pissed off if the controls and menus were changed. fair point about the puzzles tho, im guessing they were removed to allow for coop play.

But surely a good story is like the icing on a cake? I enjoyed RE4 more than 5, because I felt the intrigue of the series heading into new territory. By comparison RE5 felt completely generic.

"if no-one likes this game because of the story line get a book" then by your logic..we should just play space invaders!
