Rayman is back and this time there is no one to save, instead it is time for a bit of a sporting competition. Unlike previous instalments Rayman M is a multiplayer game split INTO two different modes, a racing mode and a battle mode.

The race mode pits players in a foot race over typically wacky and bizarre Rayman environments. Along the way you’ll have to run, jump, climb and helicopter hover his way to pass the post in first place. The levels contain numerous shortcuts and traps to spice each race up, as well players can swing on Lum Loops, climb up fences, and even shoot lums at special levers to change the lay of the land. Depending on how you interact with the level and which route you take the experience can be different every time you play, ensuring lots of replay value.

For those who prefer their gameplay a bit more aggressive the battle mode pits players into a single arena, the objective to steal Lums from the other players. To gain Lums you’ve got to shoot the other characters, it plays like a simplified FPS deathmatch, however that’s not a bad thing as the gameplay benefits from it, becoming more fun and entertaining then most games in the genre. The mode also includes the staple Rayman ingredients such as, power-up’s, traps and special projectiles.

Both modes have twelve different levels, split into four different worlds. From the start only three levels are open, progress through the first three and the next batch will open and so on. Every time a player wins you’ll be awarded prize money, which can be used to buy new features, skins, characters, levels and modes.

The game uses the exceptionally beautiful Rayman 2 engine to good effect; so expect a wide range of detailed textures, vibrant colours and stunning effects. From an early look it appears that the real-time shadows from Rayman 2: Revolution have been changed to the circle ones found in the dreamcast version, obviously to keep the frame rate blistering when a lot is going on on-screen.

Rayman M will support online play, so you’ll be able to engage in some frantic four-player action. To appease solo players there will be different modes unique to the single player mode; in the race mode there’s Lum Mode which involves catching the most amount of Lums before crossing the finish line and Target Mode, a time attack to beat your best times.
