Prince of Persia creator elaborates on the transition from video game to film and talks about the next title...

Jordan Mechner, the creator of Prince of Persia, recently delivered a keynote speech at GDC China, in which the game maker-cum-filmmaker talked extensively about the franchise, his original aspirations and ultimately where the game series could be heading.

A Gamasutra article highlights the progression of the series from game to film, sharing Mechner's thoughts on his roles as game developer to script writer.  Intriguingly, Mechner describes the franchise prior to Sands of Time as "a garden that I was neglecting. By 2001 Prince of Persia was really a dead franchise -- completely and totally dead."

Later Mechner shared his views on the future of the Prince of Persia video game series, following the tepid response to the 2008 attempted reboot.

"I don't have a preconception of what the Prince of Persia game in 10 years should look like", Mechner claimed.  "I think we're at a good place because the games that have been done up to this point have been so scattered and the franchise isn't locked into one place, but I think people have feelings about which parts they like best... The next game can take the best parts of the franchise and build from there."
