Following recent hints from Germany, Ubisoft confirms the development of Prince of Persia: Rival Swords...

Back in August, news from Germany's age rating governing body USK emerged that revealed a new Prince of Persia title for PSP. Entitled 'Rival Swords', further information on the game was unavailable pending an official announcement from Ubisoft - an announcement that has been made today.

Confirming Prince of Persia: Rival Swords, Ubisoft has revealed (rather unsurprisingly) that the game will be heavily based upon Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, which was released for home consoles earlier in 2006. Following their escape from the Island of Time, the Prince and his new love Kaileena find themselves returning to a Babylon beset with running battles. Kaileena herself is captured and killed, releasing the Sands of Time once more. Identified as an enemy of the state, the Prince goes on the run, only to discover that he's developed a demonic alter-ego, the Dark Prince.

Ubisoft has confirmed new content for Rival Swords, in addition to providing a portable outlet for the Prince's third adventure. A new multiplayer mode that sees the two princes races through level against each other has been been announced, together with new chariot missions that will be available from the main menu itself.

Rival Swords follows on from the series debut on PSP, Prince of Persia: Revelations, which was hampered somewhat by the lack of a second analogue nipple on Sony's handheld. Hopefully developers Pipeworks will be working on creating a more suitable control system this time around.

Set for release in Europe in time for Christmas 2006, North American gamers will have to wait until 2007.

We'll have more on Prince of Persia: Rival Swords in the future...
