Expectations that this might be an original POP title for the Sony handheld is shot down in pieces...

Yesterday we reported on the news of Ubisoftâ??s unveiling of PSP titles set for release at the end of the year and the first quarter 2006, such as FRANTIX and GripShift together with Prince of Persia PSP, which we hoped would offer owners of the handheld an original POP experience. Sadly this hope turned out to be ill-founded with todayâ??s announcement from Ubisoft that the title (imaginatively called Prince of Persia PSP â?“ Working Title) will essentially be a port of POP: Warrior Within with a few extras thrown in for good measure.

Set for release in December, Prince of Persia PSP will feature new maps and puzzles together with redesigned levels, but will retain the overall storyline of the Princeâ??s escape from the Dahaka monster.

Once again it seems PSP owners will be able to fork out for a superficially adapted port of a home console title, something that will undoubtedly make them glad they handed over a number of £20 notes on September 1st. The PSP is already suffering in Japan from a distinct lack of second wave titles, and it seems that the European market will be heavily constricted by a wall of ports that offer the consumer very little besides an empty wallet â?“ is it too soon to begin whispering about the handheld consoleâ??s demiseâ?¦Death by Port???

Of course Ubisoft was the company that brought the fantastic Lumines over to the West and weâ??ll be forever grateful for that, but we can only beg in no uncertain terms for more original PSP games â?“ please!

Weâ??ll have more on Prince of Persia PSP (Working Title) shortlyâ?¦
