Human Head Games is developing a sequel to its 2006 original...

Bethesda has announced that Human Head Games is developing a sequel to its 2006 game, Prey, which will launch across Xbox 360, PS3, and PC platforms in 2012.

The first details on Prey 2 are due to emerge in the next couple of months with the series' new publisher, Bethesda, remaining tight-lipped on key features and concepts at this stage.

Human Head's original Prey was published by 2K Games with intellectual property rights held by Duke Nukem developer, 3D Realms alongside its parent company, Apogee Software. As 3D Realms struggled to finish development of Duke Nukem Forever it sold off a number of key IPs including Prey in 2009, which subsequently landed at Bethesda.

"We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2," said Chris Rhinehart, Project Lead. "Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We're excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are."

Update: Bethesda's Director of Marketing and PR, Pete Hines has told IGN that Prey 2 is not being developed using id Tech 5:

"This game has been in development for quite a while and id Tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn't an option," he confirmed.

The original press release from Bethesda stated that, "Prey 2 is being built on the cutting edge id tech engine from id Software," so presumably the game is utilising an iteration of the id Tech 4 engine.
