VoD To Hit PS3 This Summer??? News

US newspaper reports suggest that a Video on Demand service could arrive on the PlayStation 3 as early as the summer...

Having already won the HD optical disc format war with blu-Ray, Sony now seems to be focusing on delivering a solid digital distribution service over PlayStation 3. Reports from California are today suggesting that such a video store could hit the PlayStation Network as soon as this summer.

Appearing in the Los Angeles Times, SCE executives are said to be currently in negotiations to license TV shows and movies for the service, with Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America confirming that, "we'll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used."

The video service would be in direct competition with Microsoft's own Xbox 360 Video Marketplace, which so far includes thousands of hours of TV and movies - in the US, at least. Over here in Blighty meanwhile, we're yet to see a single hour of TV content (aside from a couple of Viva Pinata episodes and a lone episode of South Park), and only a few dozen movies - let's hope that SCEE can hit the ground running over here when the PS3 video store arrives on this side of the Atlantic then.
