Laughter sensing technology is the latest whacky patent to come out of Sony's R&D department...
Seemingly not happy with its patent application for a coffee mug controlled PS3 earlier this year, Sony has know filed for a patent that allows the PS3 to detect when a user is laughing.
The technology, illustrated above, detects a user's laughter with a microphone that picks up the sound and a camera that identifies gestures and expressions. The software's application is not limited to laughter sensing though, as Sony suggests that it could even recognize "when two individuals give each other a 'High Five.'"
According to the application (spotted by Siliconera), a range of other emotions including joy, excitement, anger, and sadness can also be picked up by the software. There are even indications that the prospective technology could recognize a bored user (please refrain from making the obvious joke, Xbox 360 fanboys).
