Financial analysts question which division will drive Sony through tough times...
As part of a measure to address the current financial slump, Sony has announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs from its electronic division, representing 5% of the workforce.
Sony aims to cut costs by 100bn yen by the end of the next financial year, which along with the job cuts will also be assisted by shutting down 10% of its 57 manufacturing sites and cutting investment in its electronic operations by 30%.
Despite the PlayStation brand being the dominant Sony product for the last decade, financial analysts portray a concerning image for the electronics giant.
"Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits," claimed Katsuhiko Mori, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments. "The next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company."
Having scaled back its semiconductor business in the past and facing stiff competition in the consumer electronics division (and no Spider-Man 4 from Sony Pictures), it's apparent that the electronics giant is waiting on the next "big thing" and the PlayStation no longer appears to fill the gap.
Perhaps Celine Dion will rise forth in a moment of turmoil for Sony BMG and save the day...

but people have come to accept the rrod its been happening for years now unlike the yellow light of death thats not because of unreliable parts but due to a firmware update, is this an indication that sony had tried to overclock the ps3 and may have had a stable overclock but releasing a firmware update with the overclock included may have caused the trapped gas in the circuit boards.

Actually we can still complain about the RROD because the xbox has a 54 percent failure rate compared to the PS3's 14.7

It's really a low failure rate when compared to Xbox's 45% failure rate in the earlier generations of systems.
A .5% deficiant rate is quite low and seems an acceptable rate for any product. It seems that if Sony can compensate these very few failures with replacement systems ect. then this would be a very small problem.
