SCEE boss reveals mid-year introduction of a smaller Cell; PS3 price drop in the summer?
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss, David Reeves, has today confirmed that the production of PlayStation 3's will become more cost effective from the summer.
During an interview with The Guardian, Reeves revealed that a smaller 45nm Cell chip will be introduced to the PlayStation 3 in mid-2009, increasingly the economy of the console's manufacturing costs.
In the short-term however, Reeves remains adamant that a price cut for PlayStation 3 won't be coming anytime soon, despite the console remaining the most expensive of the three current-gen machines. The SCEE boss also revealed that despite Sony Corporation's recent financial horrors, there are no plans to further restructure the SCE business:
"We took our cuts in 07 and 08, we restructured and streamlined and we're as lean, as mean as we can be. I have seen no plans to cut jobs and it wouldn't be productive to do so. We're always looking at ways to reduce costs, replacing the current 65 nanometre Cell chip with a 45 nanometre one probably in middle of year. But will it be anything as off-strategy as releasing a PS3 with a DVD rather than a Blu-ray drive? I doubt it."
Microsoft reduced the size of the chips in the Xbox 360 during 2008, allowing them to lower the prices of all three SKUs of their console - hopefully SCE will follow suit ahead of a recession-hit holiday season 2009.

but people have come to accept the rrod its been happening for years now unlike the yellow light of death thats not because of unreliable parts but due to a firmware update, is this an indication that sony had tried to overclock the ps3 and may have had a stable overclock but releasing a firmware update with the overclock included may have caused the trapped gas in the circuit boards.

Actually we can still complain about the RROD because the xbox has a 54 percent failure rate compared to the PS3's 14.7

It's really a low failure rate when compared to Xbox's 45% failure rate in the earlier generations of systems.
A .5% deficiant rate is quite low and seems an acceptable rate for any product. It seems that if Sony can compensate these very few failures with replacement systems ect. then this would be a very small problem.
