PlayStation3 Backwards Compatibility Confusion News

Reports that the next-gen console will have physical PS2 hardware to enable backwards compatibility begin to emerge...

With PlayStation3 set to offer backwards compatibility for PlayStation2 and PSone titles, online publication IGN has reported on a story from Japan that Sony's next-gen console will have a physical core chipset from the PS2 rather than take Microsoft's emulation route, at least during the initial part of the PS3 life-cycle.

Incorporating such hardware inevitably increases production and retail costs, although Sony aren't quite prepared to comment on how the PlayStation3 will actually provide backwards compatibility just yet. Following the IGN article, industry publication Gamasutra has contacted Sony about the issue, but in true teasing style the company responded with a "no comment", adding that the original article was based on speculation but that Sony would be clarifying the matter shortly.

It seems that backwards compatibility is one area for both Sony and Microsoft where they're damned whichever route they take, with one option resulting in increased hardware costs and the other creating situations where the length of time emulation will be supported is claimed and counter-claimed.
