Sony's 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU is to be phased out in Europe to make way for a new 80 GB model...
First of all they release the 60GB model in Europe, then they launch the limited 40GB model with no backwards compatibility (in order to satisfy a price cut), and now Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has decided to scrap the 40GB machine in favour of an all-new 80GB SKU.
Other than the increased hard drive capacity, this new 80GB SKU will have the same specifications as the 40GB console (i.e. no backwards compatibility and two USB ports rather than four) and will retail at the same £299 (399 Euros) price tag across PAL territories where it will be released on August 27th.
SCEE's President, David Reeves, had the following at E3 (according to MCV):
"In PAL, we will introduce an 80GB PS3 80Gb on August 27th. It will be a simultaneous launch across all PAL territories, and reach Russia two weeks later, due to compliance issues. It will cost 399 Euros or £299. Promotional bundles will arrive between mid-September and mid-December at various prices.
"The 40GB model will be replaced by 80GB. Don't ask if we're going to go down in price on 40GB - the answer is no.
"This has been planned by Kaz [Hirai] for months. There are very few 40GB models left - especially in the UK. We predict we'll be out of stock by the time we launch."
In other PS3 news, SCEE has announced the launch of a Platinum range of games for the console. Games that have sold over 400,000 units in Europe will fill qualify for the range, which will initially include MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Virtua Tennis, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Assassin's Creed, and SmackDown vs. Raw 2008.
The Platinum range will be released on August 1st, with individual games set to retail at 29.99 Euros (£23.77).
"If you're a longstanding PS3 owner with gaps in your collection - or perhaps you've just joined the family - the PS3 Platinum range is your chance to pick up some of the very best games at a wallet-friendly price," said David Reeves, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "With great titles spanning a huge breadth of gaming experiences, this August is a great time to be a PS3 owner."

but people have come to accept the rrod its been happening for years now unlike the yellow light of death thats not because of unreliable parts but due to a firmware update, is this an indication that sony had tried to overclock the ps3 and may have had a stable overclock but releasing a firmware update with the overclock included may have caused the trapped gas in the circuit boards.

Actually we can still complain about the RROD because the xbox has a 54 percent failure rate compared to the PS3's 14.7
OFF Topic: MAG will be pwnage

good point, but who's to say the complaints wont keep coming in? could easily be a majour fault in the system.
but i aint gettin called a fanboy again so ill stick with ur comment =) lets just hope sony can address the problem like microsoft did with the enw motherboards they were using

It's really a low failure rate when compared to Xbox's 45% failure rate in the earlier generations of systems.
A .5% deficiant rate is quite low and seems an acceptable rate for any product. It seems that if Sony can compensate these very few failures with replacement systems ect. then this would be a very small problem.
