SCEA announce firm details and pricing for the PS2 online strategy.
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) have official announced details regarding the PS2’ online strategy in the US. The network adaptor will be released in August for $39.99, and will enable users to access the internet using broadband connection either through the 10/100Mb Ethernet connection, or the narrowband connection using the built-in 56K V.90 modem.

Originally you needed to plug the adaptor into the PS2’ HDD, however knowing that the gaming audience doesn’t take too kindly to upgrades, this has been redesigned to connect straight to the PS2 through the rear port.

The PS2 Network Adaptor will be bundled with a disc allowing you to connect to a variety of ISP’s, playable demo’s of online titles, a set-up disc, user manual and product registration forms. SCEA have partnered with a number of ISP’s including Earthlink, AT&T WorldNet, SBC-Prodigy, and Sympatico. Users can also connect using their own ISP connections, including Cable Modem, ADSL or 56K connection.

SCEA are planning to release 12 online games simultaneously with the launch on the Network Adaptor in August, these include; Twisted Metal Online, SOCOM: Navy Seals, Frequency, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, Tribes: Aerial Assault. All the game titles will only require the PS2 Network Adaptor, the PS2 HDD is not required.

Sony also mentioned that most of the first party PS2 online games will be free of charge. “We believe that this approach is truly extending the PlayStation 2 gaming experience into the world of online content versus forcing a strategy on the market that it is not ready to embrace. ”

Sony have stated that web-browsing is no longer one of their goals, and would prefer to concentrate on games and other forms of online entertainment. SCEA are planning to introduce the second part of their online strategy – the HDD and the Sony Online Network – by the end of the year.
This is their peak because of MGS4, Halo 3 did the same thing but in much larger numbers. 360 has a sick holiday lineup and they will cut the price by a hundred bucks. Then theres the new Xbox Live with Netflix and possibly a FREE Xbox Live by then. Resistance isn't enough to stop it.
