SCEE announce plans to release the PS2 Linux Kit in Europe. Specific details inside...

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) will release the Linux Kit for the PlayStation2 in May 2002, targeted towards the Linux community in Europe.

Since the launch of PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment has received numerous requests from members of the Linux community to enable Linux programs to run on PlayStation 2. In response to these requests, the Linux Beta Version Kit was made available to approximately 7,900 enthusiasts in Japan in July 2001. Worldwide requests for the Linux kit to be made available outside Japan have continued, and over 9,000 Linux users responded to an SCEE online questionnaire, saying that they would buy the kit if it were available. In response to this movement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will now release Linux to support the Linux user community across the PAL territories.

The Linux Kit comprises an internal 40 Gb Hard Disk Drive, a high-speed Network Adapter (100 BASE-T Ethernet), two Linux installment discs (DVD-ROM), and a Monitor Cable Adaptor, with audio connectors, for display on computer monitors. A high-resolution computer display is assumed as the graphics output; standard output being XGA (1024 x 768 dots). With this kit, users can not only run the wide variety of computer applications written for the Linux operating system, but can also create original programs and applications designed to run on Linux.

More details on the product, together with community based features, images and information on where to source the Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) will be released on SCEE's technology site www.technology.scee.net as soon as they become available.

Product Information</b

Product Name: Linux Kit (for PlayStation® 2): LDTL-00004
Suggest Retail Price: Euros: 249 ~ £150 (excluding VAT and shipping)
Release Date: May 2002
Kit consists of:
Network Adapter (Ethernet): SCPH-10350E
40 Gb Internal Hard Disk Drive (for PlayStation2): SCPH-20401E
Monitor Cable Adaptor (for PlayStation 2) (with audio connectors): SCPH-10320E
DVD discs (2), containing Linux installation and run time discs,
USB keyboard: SCPH-10240E
USB mouse: SCPH-10230E
Technical documentation and software manual
This is their peak because of MGS4, Halo 3 did the same thing but in much larger numbers. 360 has a sick holiday lineup and they will cut the price by a hundred bucks. Then theres the new Xbox Live with Netflix and possibly a FREE Xbox Live by then. Resistance isn't enough to stop it.
