Phantom Crash - Q&A Feature

By Chris Leyton on 22/11/2002

We chat with the producer of Phantom Crash, Mr. Ohta Kenji, and find out about the game, its inspirations, and the impending sequel.

Mr Ohta Kenji, it’s a pleasure to meet you. What is your position on the Phantom Crash development team?

- Hi Chris, I am the producer of Phantom Crash.

Phantom Crash is so different compared to other mech games that is out there. It’s almost like it’s a bit of simulation and a bit of action. But what in your words makes this game so different?

- Many of mech games are based on military concept but Phantom Crash has its idea and story based on “Love & Pops”. This game is not about a war. This is about “playing” and it’s what makes Phantom Crash unique compared to other titles. We wanted speed, flexibility, complete busy action that really gets you going. It’s just cool, and coolness is what we want in our game.

I know exactly what you mean because based on what I have been seeing the game is cool. So with all this customisation that is so addictive, how many Scoobees can be made?

- LOL! With all the many different combination that you can do with your right & left arm, legs, back, body, Colour, Stickers and A.I. we haven’t even tried to count how many Scoobees we could make! There’s a lot!

The Optic Camouflage is definitely pretty slick. Can you tell us a bit about it?

- Originally, we had assumption for versus mode for Phantom Crash and invisible enemy would make a battle very interesting especially when we are fighting against another human. Have you ever played a multiplayer player game and wondered what it would be like to blast your enemies behind their back while you’re invisible, leaving to wonder who put them down? Crafty but true, we’ve wondered that so Optic Camouflage we thought was a cool thing to include. Using it wisely is your key to a better strategy in this game.

So, what kind of depth can players expect in the single player aspect of Phantom Crash?

- Damage received from front, side and rear have different damage rate.
Thus using Optic Camouflage to manipulate better jump to attack the enemy from behind is needed as a strategy. And also, users need to customize their mech depending on the attributes of 3 areas.

The Xbox, how has developing on the machine been for you guys?

- Developing on the Xbox given us so much scope to bring our world in our mind to realization. When we thought of putting in things like vapour trails and mist of smoke the Xbox we was able to pull it off! Especially the Optic Camouflage was possible thanks to Xbox capability. We cannot display this feature on other platforms for the moment with such ease as to how we thought of them.

Phantom Crash has many songs in the game that are from real music artists. How did you go about getting these artists to create the songs for Phantom Crash?

- We asked for music to many independent artists to create this collection. We tried to select as many genres as possible. I’m very sure that there will be one that will be to your liking!

Why didn’t you make use of the Xbox custom music feature (feature that allow music to be rip from a CD and used for in-game) in Phantom Crash?

- We thought about it, but this idea did not match our concept to input many songs in a default and therefore we did not use this feature this time.

Phantom Crash looks like a great multiplayer game and I can imagine so people going crazy it was using the Xbox Live. So how come you didn’t incorporated Xbox LIVE in Phantom Crash?

- The timing of the information in regards to LIVE was not in favour of our development team. It was due to time constraint that we had to release Phantom Crash without LIVE feature.

There is a heavy rumour on the Internet world about Phantom Crash receiving an Add-On disk. So tell me, is it true?

- We cannot release or add LIVE service through expansion packs.

Ahh, well here’s another one. Is Phantom Crash 2 really planned for or already in development? What’s the word?

- We are still in the planning phase. Our decision will be based on international sales figure. But I like to do it though, there’s so much potential in Phantom Crash than we have realised and many more ideas just kept coming into our team’s heads. So you never know!

Great! Thanks for your time Mr Ohta!

- My pleasure!
