Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark

As everyone and their grandma already knows, Perfect Dark is the followup to the 1997
Rare developed blockbuster, GoldenEye. The game uses the celebrated 007 engine, but
advances it in every conceivable category. That alone should have fans drooling. Perfect
Dark’s near perfect E3 showing at this past May has many industry watchers already
labeling it the game of the year. Infact a game hasn’t been this hyped since...well, since
Zelda: Ocarina of Time. So what’s all the fuss about?
Players control Joanna Dark as she uncovers an X-Files like conspiracy brewing under
the DataDyne corporation. Of course Ms.Dark comes fully equipped with all the
firepower a person could ask for-- a whopping 40 different weapons! The game’s visuals
as expected are incredible, even by Rare’s standards. The stunning lighting effects and
detailed texture and polygonal models create a Blade Runner-esque ‘look’ for the game.
Perfect Dark will also feature a whopping hour and a half of real time cinemas complete
with professional voice acting. Looks like this game has GoldenEye, Zelda 64, and Metal
Gear Solid beat in one neat package. Home theater owners will be happy to note that PD
also features a true 16x9 widescreen mode and (oh yes!) Dolby Pro Logic Surround
Sound. You won’t believe the soundtrack quality tunes that are pumping out of this
cartridge.
Level layout is similar to GoldenEye, but players will soon learn that the level designs
are much more complex and intricate than any other home first-person shooter. What
about multiplayer, you ask? Don’t worry, if you thought GoldenEye’s multiplayer was
good, Perfect Dark will leave you shaken and stirred. The multiplayer option will feature
7-10 computer controller ‘bots’ (opponents), which opens up many more possibilities.
Rare also went to the next level by creating a totally new feature-- simulants. Players can
have ‘simulants’ (little aliens) on their team which they can control using the D-Pad. The
new FarSight gun will definitely also spice up multiplayer. The weapon can ‘trace’ the
heat movements of your opponents through a night vision like view. This gun is very
effective at hunting down ‘campers’.
The innovations don’t stop there. The game is compatible with the upcoming 64GB pak.
Why you ask? Using the GameBoy Camera, players can take a picture of their face and
transfer it onto a character polygon model in the game through the 64GB pak. That
means your multiplayer character could have your face on it. This is sure to be a feature
that will be very popular. Personally I’m hoping Rare will use the Expansion Pak for
smoother framerates. A game that could look, sound, and play this good with a silky
smooth framerate would definitely make me lose control of my bodily functions. If all
this hasn’t convinced you to buy the game yet, chances are you’ll be hooked when it is
released in North America this December. Now can you imagine--dare I say it-- Perfect
Dark 2 on the Project: Dolphin?

Pete Deol
