Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark

The game that could overtake GoldenEye as the N64's premier first person shooter is getting it's very own GameBoy Color game. Now the cynics among you may be shouting "cash-in" already, but hold off for a bit, as this game is being developed by Rare themselves and looks to compliment it's bigger brother (or should that be sister?).

The GBC game is set before the N64 version plot wise, picking Joanna Dark's story just as she completes her training at the Carrington Institute, and going into her first proper mission. The mission seems simple at first, go into South America and destroy an illegal cyborg factory, as you do every other day as a secret agent. However there is more to this than meets the eye, and the game will explain more about the background of the relationship between Ms. Dark and the dataDyne company that is manifested in the N64 game.

Rather than trying to do a first-person game on the GBC, Rare have opted for the somewhat easier task of a third person adventure, and at the moment it resembles the old Metal Gear games, which is a good thing. The game is not all about fast paced action, which is there of course, but it is complimented by puzzle solving and adventuring. In terms of utilising features of the GBC, Perfect Dark is doing a damn good job! With Rumble Pack and Printer support, as well as data transfer by infra-red not to mention the compulsory death match via link cable. Interestingly the game is compatible with the N64 via the GB pack, which makes me think that the two will be intertwined in some way that only Rare could think of... Oh and the game will also feature digitised speech and an FMV intro, which will be interesting to behold I feel.

The game is coming along nicely, and bar any sudden Rare delays, which is always a possibility, the game should be on the shelves around the same time as the N64 version, which is this April.

Mark Simons
